Five Miles

Maurice Fulton & More 21:00 – 7:00 39b Markfield Road, N15 4QA £10.00

Five Miles is a newish venue in the depths of North London, which offers a hip Middle Eastern restaurant, bar, brewery and club. Its celebration for New Year’s Eve combined these elements: hosting a 5-course tasting menu dinner, followed by a club night headlined by soul and electronic DJ Maurice Fulton which went on until the early first hours of 2019.

I’d never heard of Five Miles before this event. Judging, however, by the ‘coming up’ section of their website these guys are getting pretty popular, with events planned almost every Thursday-Sunday. Mid-priced tickets were decent at around a tenner, with prices escalating up to £20/30 the later it got. Even the most expensive tickets were still fairly priced for a New Year’s event in London though (I remember paying £50 once). The dinner option also seemed like a sweet deal, with alcoholic drinks paired with each course. Regrettably, I did not attend so cannot comment on the quality of the food, but the menu sounded banging and it didn't leave a lingering smell all night for when we arrived. That's always a plus, because, lets face it, no one wants to party in a club that smells like a tasting menu...

The venue itself has a large outside area with a few benches, an open-plan bar leading onto a skinny, long, dark dance floor. The bar area is pleasant, bright and clean; however, the club area was a little too cramped and could have seriously done with air con or simply some form of ventilation. The toilet queue was bad for the first couple of hours but ceased to be a problem around 3am on wards when you could wizz in for a whazz quite easily. Drinks were averagely priced at £4 for a single, £5 for a beer, and a rather nice surprise selection of £6 cocktails on tap.

Music on the night was upbeat and fun, with a few disco classics thrown in now and then for good measure. The staff were friendly, as were the general crowd there, with space not ever becoming a serious issue even with the packed-out dance floor. Five Miles works nicely as a multi-purpose hangout, where you can enjoy some interesting grub, one of the 18 beers they have on tap, or some up and coming music. Overall, I would happily make the slog up north again if the opportunity presented itself.
