Urban Village

Greenwich Peninsula

21 MAY 2017

Urban Village Fete is held in the space just next to the O2 in Greenwich. It is a contemporary twist on traditional ideas of summer fetes and village festivals. A celebration of design, music, art, events, food and entertainment, Urban Village has lots on offer to have an enjoyable and original day.

I didn't attend any of the talks or workshops held at the event, but got a nice feel for the place with a few beers and walk around. Along the left hand side of the space are small stalls with original artworks, clothes, gifts and trinkets for sale, whilst the right hand side is filled with music and street food. I didn't get any food here myself, as I had already previously eaten in Greenwich Market before walking over - but I have heard that the Fete has a tendency to run out of food quite quickly. Tom and I attempted to get an ice cream twice, before deciding on both occasions that it simply wasn't worth the half an hour queue which meandered around the centre of the festival.

The music side of things was better, British DJ Giles Peterson was playing and the DJ's before him were good also - playing a mixture of funk, disco and generally feel-good music. The music set the tone of the whole place - everyone was friendly and in a positive mood as far as I saw and the atmosphere was really pleasant.

Overall, this was a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon. A good place to stop off if you're local but I don't it quite hits the mark to make the journey from Clapham again.
