Goddards

British

Address: 22 King William Walk Greenwich SE10 9HU

Price: £

Goddards was established in 1980, this particular branch opening in 1952 - the same time as the Cutty Sark was placed in dry dock. The history of Goddard's pie and mash is vast and lengthy, it remains a family business (though not in the original Goddard name), and the pies remain just as popular.

When visiting London one has to try pie a mash, a British staple and timeless dish which takes you right back to the roots of Britain, before it was all trendy new pop ups and crisp sandwiches a tenner a pop(?!) Whatsmore, the location of this particular pie shop is right on the edge of Greenwich market, a FANTASTIC place with a warm atmosphere and very very reasonable prices. Everything about Greenwich feels local, almost like a village or a much smaller British city such as Oxford or Cambridge. Cobbled streets and cosy pubs line the streets surrounding Greenwich park, where you can even catch a deer or two if you're lucky!

Anyway, enough about Greenwich and more about Goddards. When stepping in you feel as though you have gone back in time, the wooden booths are positioned under chandeliers and next to a large counter from which to place your order. The staff are amazingly friendly and welcoming, proper old school cockney brits. Most importantly though, you can get a plate of pie and mash here for as little as £3.90!

The pie's themselves have a number of fillings, I personally had the chicken and mushroom £4.40 and it was great. Not too big, not too small, puff pastry which hadn't gone soggy on the bottom and a very generous portion of mash. I added some mushy peas for 80p and and can of coke for £1.00. Some 'authentic' pie and mash places in London want to play on the fact it is a go to dish for tourist and up their prices, whereas Goddards is just as reasonable as it has always been and honest prices are the best prices.

Goddards has won the Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence three years in a row (2014-2016) and it's no surprise, a place like this is both authentic and modest. Hearty yet delicious food in a simple yet historically rich environment. I would definitely recommend a visit if you happen to be in Greenwich, even a trip out there to visit Goddards, the market which surrounds it and the park around the corner (great views of London from top of the hill). It's Pie and Mash for little cash - wheeey.
