Prince of Wales has been around since my mum was partying in the 80s. Known for having one of the 'best outdoor terraces you'll find in London'(Time Out), it's regarded by party goers south of the river as a reliable, fun and diverse venue.
Holding events most Thursday's, Friday's and Saturday's, Prince of Wales is an all weekend affair, meaning that there is usually something for everyone - no matter what you're in to. Nights range from comedy shows, to live music acts, to 80s nights, to hip hop nights. Some quite big names have played in prince of wales, especially in the dance music circle.
Prince of Wales has 3 floors: The ground floor is a pub, the floor above (accessible via a side entrance around the corner from the main pub doors) houses the main dancefloor area, whilst the floor above this gives way to the outdoor terrace, some further bars and the 'boiler room' - a further smaller dance floor, which is as sweaty as it sounds. I've never been in the pub so I can't comment but the POW club, comprised of these two dancefloors and terrace is a good laugh, as long as you're not expecting too much.
The main dancefloor is all sticky floors and coloured lights, it can come off a bit cheesy at times. The roof terrace is nice, yes, but I wouldn't go as far to say it's the best in London... I mean I haven't been to many but I'm sure we can do better. In the summer they have music out on the terrace which is a great addition, as indoors is pretty cramped and poorly ventilated, however the terrace has to shut at 11pm due to noise complaints which is a bit disheartening.
Drinks are expensive, but where in London are they not? The good thing about POW is that it has numerous bars: one in the main dancefloor, another big one on the terrace, and yet another one or two stalls on the terrace too - last time I went there was a Rum Shack in the corner (a welcome addition).
Overall, Prince of Wales is a decent night to go to in the Summer months with a good group of friends and a light heart. Don't expect too much and you will be happily surprised, expect a lot and you will be thoroughly disappointed. Works well as a continuation of day drinking - but not as the main event.
